Frequently Asked Questions
How much does this cost?
Here is a breakdown for reference.
1. On-site repairs—minimum $400. This can cover several pieces but depends on what and how much is needed. An estimate can be provided prior to scheduling with photos.
2. Restoration/refinishing—These must come to the shop and can vary from piece to piece.
• - dining table with up to three leaves - $1500-$2500.
• Coffee tables—$600–$1500 for large ones.
• End tables/nightstands - $500 - $850
• Dining chairs with wooden seats—$475to $650.
• Dining chair with upholstered removable seat—$400 - $650.
• Buffets/consoles/TV stands—$1000-$1500.
• Armoires—$1500–$3000.
• Beds—$850-$3000.
How long does it take?
It can range depending on what it is, what it needs, and when it is picked up. The beginning of the year has a quicker turnaroundtime than the holiday season. Usually a refinishing will take between 4 and 6 weeks during the spring months and 6 to 8 weeks during the fall and winter months.
How do I know if it is worth doing the work?
If the piece is sentimental, of better quality than what is currently being offered new, or of unique design, then it would be worth it. The quality of furniture is going down month by month while the price continues to rise. It is always better to refinish and restore a better-quality piece than to purchase something new of worse quality for more money. As long as you have patience to wait for the process to be completed, then you will end up with a nice piece of furniture that you love, that you have memories with, that now has a custom catalyzed lacquer finish, and that will last you long enough to pass it down in the family.
Can you repair my sticking drawer?
Can you repair my drawer that hangs down when it is opened? Short answer—yes. However, with our minimum on-site repair fee of $400, it might be better to check out the "customer remedy options" page, where you can learn to take care of this and other minor repairs yourself.
Do you reupholster parts of a piece of furniture if the rest needs to be refinished, such as with a wooden trim settee?
Yes, although we do not perform complete reupholstery services, if a portion needs to be reupholstered and we are doing the refinishing of the wooden parts, then we would either complete the upholstery portion ourselves or work closely with our upholstering company to complete the project.
How much is an on-site report for an insurance claim?
If you are filing an insurance claim with a moving company, we recommend you file the claim prior to having us come make a visit. Sometimes the moving or insurance companies will hire us directly, so you do not have to worry about the details or payment. If they require you to hire us and then you provide the report to them, then we charge you the same fee we would charge the moving company; however, you should be reimbursed by the moving/insurance company for our fee at the time of your settlement. Check with them prior to contacting us, as we will collect payment at the time of delivery of the report while on-site. That cost is $315 for up to 20 items. After 20 items there is an additional charge of $5 per line item. So an inspection of 20 items will cost $315. An inspection of 1 item will also cost $315. An inspection of 25 items will cost $340.
Can we bring the furniture to you or pick it up when it is finished?
No, we do not have the option for you to bring or pick up your own furniture. We cover all of midwestern Florida, so it is a long drive for a lot of people. Part of our service is to do all the transportation for you.
Can you come out to me and provide an estimate to refinish?
Yes, but it will cost you $315. We can provide you with a FREE estimate if you fill out the online form and provide several pictures of the item.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes, we are fully licensed and insured for coverage of your home and everything that is in it if we are doing an on-site repair, for everything in the shop if it is brought there, and for everything in the vehicles/trailers in case of an accident during transportation.
Will it stink up my home?
The repair process does use lacquer in aerosol form. It does have a VOC and a smell associated with it. The smell dissipates quickly however and no off gassing happens afterwards. In the case where a lot of spraying would be needed then it might fall into the restoration/refinishing category and be brought back to the shop. In very specific circumstances a water based lacquer could be used, but these are difficult to get perfect in Florida, can take longer to complete the repair and will end up costing more. This is a case by case basis and not recommended for the best repairs.
Can you repair hardwood floors?
Sort of. If the damage is smaller than a dime, then it can be filled and color matched. It is better than board replacement. Long shallow scratches are usually not 100% repairable.
Do you provide appraisals?
No, we are not licensed to provide binding appraisals. We can give you an idea about the value of a piece in case you need it to file an insurance claim. There are online appraisals that can provide you with a binding appraisal via photographs. These can cost you hundreds of dollars per piece, so be sure it is needed before getting one unnecessarily. Most insurance claims do not require one.
Do you assemble furniture, like from Ikea?
Yes, I will provide assembly assistance if you need it. The minimum fee of $400 applies, though. It also needs to be new and still in the box. We do not assemble items that have been moved to new locations or that are not still packaged or in the original box. You do not want to have to pay $400 for a 90% assembly job because you did not realize you lost some pieces.
Do you do epoxy projects?
Yes, we can do epoxy pours, fills, stabilizations, duplications, etc. We can make a plain, boring piece of MDF look like veined marble or granite. This is a shop project that falls under the refinishing category even though most epoxy pours are on newly constructed pieces and do not require RE-finishing but just finishing. Epoxy pours can be very expensive. Pricing is done on a case-by-case basis.
Do you require a deposit?
Sometimes. I try not to collect deposits whenever possible, but sometimes it is required, such as with the following: I am not taking the whole piece to the shop. (If we bring the top of a table but leave the base, then I might collect a deposit because if we fail to collect payment, I won't be able to do anything with half of a table. If we bring the whole item to the shop and fail to collect payment, then we could resell the item in an attempt to recollect expenses lost, so no deposit necessary.) If a lot of colored lacquer is needed, which is a special purchase only for your project, then a deposit to cover the material cost would be collected. Usual deposits are around $500 and up to $1000 for multiple pieces or whole bedroom sets.
Do you build furniture?
Not really. While we have done so in the past and would entertain the idea again, it is not common practice. There are carpenters out there who specialize in the construction of the furniture, but they are not very proficient at finishing it. If they make it, we can finish it. If you can't find anyone to make it, then let's discuss. We might charge more and take longer, though.
Can you refinish built-in pieces such as bookcases that are part of the wall?
Yes. It requires a lot of work, site prep, several days of visits, and the inability to use that space during the process. We can bring in portable spray equipment for the best results or use a water-based wipe-on poly for the least offensive repairs with regard to smell and repair time length. These are estimated on a case-by-case basis.
Can you refinish our front door?
Yes. This requires you to barricade the door with some 2x4s and plywood for about three to four days during the refinishing process IF the doors need to come to the shop. Sometimes they can be done while still hung, but as the finish goes up to and behind the weather strip, it is not the best repair option but works if you cannot be without a door for safety reasons.
